Backward Induction

A method for solving a sequential decision problem by reasoning from the final decision point backward to determine the optimal choice at every earlier stage.

Backward induction solves a multi-stage decision tree by starting at the last decision point, determining the optimal action there, and then working backward one stage at a time, assuming every future stage will be played optimally. Each earlier decision is then evaluated based on the already-solved value of the stage that follows it, rather than in isolation.

In litigation strategy, this means evaluating an early decision, such as whether to file a particular motion, by first working out how the case would likely be litigated at trial, then how it would likely resolve at summary judgment, and only then reasoning back to what the optimal early move actually is, rather than evaluating that early move against an isolated guess about its immediate effect.
