Master Complaint (MDL)
A consolidated pleading in an MDL that sets out the claims and legal theories common to all plaintiffs, adopted by individual short-form complaints.
Rather than requiring every plaintiff in a large MDL to file a full, separately drafted complaint, courts often authorize a master complaint that lays out the common factual allegations, legal theories, and causes of action shared across the docket, drafted by plaintiffs' leadership counsel and reviewed by the court.
Individual plaintiffs then file a short-form complaint that incorporates the master complaint by reference and adds only the facts specific to their own claim, such as their product use, injury, and treatment history, which dramatically reduces the drafting and filing burden across a docket that can number in the thousands.
