How America Searches for Legal Answers

What 8,103 real legal search queries reveal about how people look for help

Key findings
  • Only 28% of legal queries are phrased as full questions — most are keyword-style searches (like "settlement calculator") rather than conversational ones, yet they still run long and specific at an average of 5.2 words.
  • When people do ask a question, "how" leads the way — searchers want process and definitions far more than they want a sales pitch.
  • The long tail is vast: expanding a handful of seed terms surfaced 8,103 distinct queries, evidence that legal questions are highly specific and reward genuinely useful, plain-English answers over broad marketing pages.

Methodology

We expanded a set of common litigation seed terms (settlements, personal injury, statute of limitations, filing and procedure, contracts, and cost) into 8,103 real Google Autocomplete suggestions, which Google ranks by popularity. IMPORTANT: because the set is seeded, the theme mix reflects our starting terms and is NOT a measure of which legal issues Americans face most — it is a snapshot of how people PHRASE and structure legal search within these topics. Every figure is computed directly from the dataset; we invent nothing.

This page is an educational explainer, not legal advice, and creates no attorney–client relationship. Juricratic is a simulation engine: every probability-like figure is a dial you set, not a calibrated prediction. Verify every rule, deadline, and figure against the authorities and orders that govern your matter.

We built the engine behind these numbers.

Juricratic turns a lawsuit into a solvable game — the same data-driven rigor, applied to a single matter you can rehearse.
